We first noticed that on her preschool years, my little sister is always restless and on the go. She also was not able to sit very long and is very inattentive to details. At first we thought that she was just too young to attend pre-school so we decided to let her in pre-school again the following year. This time aside from the above symptoms, the teacher noticed other symptoms like the inability to complete assignments, trouble in following instruction as well as directions; frequent day dreaming and she always have the difficulty on concentrating on just one subject. At home she tends to be very forgetful and often lose things because she is also unorganized. She also seems to be having a hard time to control her impulses. All the classic and most common symptoms of an ADHD child were being manifested.
ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is also known as ADD. An ADHD child usually manifest it’s symptoms during pre-school years. This condition had been affecting almost 3 to 5% of children worldwide. Generally the symptoms start to show before seven years of age. If left untreated, an ADHD child may suffer the unrelenting and persistent effects that can get in the way of learning.
The inability to be able get the most out of education is called as learning disability and this is just one effect of ADHD. As an ADHD child gets older, they may also have difficulty to fulfill full potential at work as well as difficulty in establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationship. This may also result to a negative feeling and the difficulty to be able to maintain a generally positive sense of self.
The common misconception of ADHD is that the child is unintelligent and slow on the uptake. It may seem that way but in reality, it is the opposite. ADD children are often above average and most of all has a powerful and strong creative drive. They are just having a difficulty in expressing that creative drive. They act differently from other children because they have a different brain from others. An ADD child does not process the information and thoughts the same way as the others. This in turns affects their behavior and the ability to learn in a standard setting. Their special gift is the capability to have high imagination which makes them very creative.
Unfortunately ADHD is not curable however the negative characteristics that come with it can always be treated so that the ADHD child is able to function at full capacity. We know that now and just knowing this facts had helped not only my sister but for the whole family on knowing the difference of an ADD child.
